Schaumburg is a great family destination during the holidays, with Woodfield Shopping Mall, Santa Claus, a German Christmas market and the Nutcractker Suite Ballet.

Schaumburg is in what is called the Greater Woodfield Area of the Chicago suburbs, about 25 miles west of the city of Chciago, Illinois. Woodfield Shopping Mall, brightly decorated for the holidays, is an annual excursion for many people, who visit the mall to see Santa and do their holiday shopping. The town square of Schaumburg holds a German style market on Thanksgiving weekend.

Following are some of the highlights of the Christmas season in Schaumburg.

German Christmas Market on Thanksgiving Weekend

Christkindlmarkt brings the German Market to the Schaumburg Town Square for the 11th year on November 29 and 10. The Nuremberg style outdoor Christmas Market is an outdoor event that features ethnic and domestic crafts, holiday gifts, live entertainment, food, children's activities, Santa Claus and St. Nicholas.

German markets are a tradition that is centuries old in villages across Germany and it is delightful to see the charm of the old world custom travel to towns in North America.

The Festival of Lights on Saturday allows children to participate. Children who wish to be in the lights festival should meet at the information booth at 5:15 pm on Saturday evening.

Horse drawn sleigh rides will be offered for a small fee on both days.

Admission to Chriskindlmarkt is free. The old world market will be located at the southwest corner of Schaumburg and Roselle Roads. Schaumburg is about 30 miles west of the City of Chicago.

Santa at Woodfield Mall for Christmas

Santa Claus arrived at Woodfield Mall on November 7 and will be entertaining children in the mall until December 24. Photo packages are available so families can take home mementos of their children's visit with Santa.

Visiting the mall is an annual event for many people, who come to see the decorated Christmas Tree, holiday decorations and to shop at the popular shopping venue.

Woodfield is very busy during the holiday season and parking close to the mall can be difficult to find. The Schaumburg Woodfield Trolley offers transportation between area stores, including Ikea, Roosevelt University, Costco, Marshalls, Borders, Woodfield Mall Entrance (lower level between Nordstrom and JC Penney), Woodfield Mall Entrance (upper level between Lord & Taylor and Sears), Dick's Sportting Goods, Carson Pirie Scott, Loews Theaters and Pace Northwest Transportation Center.

Woodfield Mall is on Mall Drive, near the intersection of Golf Road and Meacham Road , just west of Route 53, in Schaumburg, Illinois

The Nutcracker Suite at Prairie Arts Center

The Schaumburg Dance Company performs the classic Christmas ballet from December 5 - 14 at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts. 1-847-398-6176.
