Galena is a historic town near the Mississippi River with cobblestone streets, rolling hills, 19th century architecture, shops and restaurants for a leisurely getaway.

Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Galena, Illinois in Jo Davies County. The historic city near the Mississippi River is the place to go for a day, or weekend, trip in northwestern Illinois. Special events in November include the Fall Eagle Fest, Ryan Mansion Tours and the Nouveau Wine Festival.

Galena a Charming Historic Town

A visit to Galena is like a step back in time, with cobblestone streets and 19th century architecture. Some of America's early architectural styles can be found in Galena, including Greek Revival, Italiante and Queen Anne. Shops and restaurants along the winding streets of the historic downtown promise a day of interesting browsing and dining.

Fall Eagle Fest

On November 1, 2008, the annual Eagle Festival celebrated the Bald Eagle, the United States National Emblem. The festival, which runs from 9 am to 3 pm, features a live Birds of Prey show, environmental displays, nature photography, food and market vendors.

The live Birds of Prey show will be held three times on Saturday, at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon and 2:30 pm. The show, presented by John and Dale Stokes features hawks and owls flying over rthe heads of the audience. .

The Fall Eagle Fest is a family friendly event, great for children and adults. Admission is free to the indoor event at Galena Convention Center.

Nouveau Wine Festival

On November 22-21, 2008, the annual Nouveau celebration is held. Events include a parade down Main Street and lunch and dinner featuring Galena Cellars Nouveau 2008.

On Friday, several Galena restaurants serve special Nouveau Luncheons include Boone's Place, Fried Green Tomatoes, One Eleven Main, DeSoto House Hotel , Vinny Vanucchi's.

The Irish Cottage will serve a Nouveau Dinner on Friday night. Wine and cheese receptions will be held at Benjamin's, Paradise Bar & Grille on Friday night.

On Saturday, several restaurants will serve food and drink specials. On Saturday nights and Nouveau Party and Dance will be held at The Ramada Inn starting a 8 pm. Admission to the party is $10 for the public and $5 for registered guests.

Ryan Mansion Tours

During selected days in the month of November, the grand Victorian mansion details life in 1876. Tours are offer at the grand mansion on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Admission, Adults $10, Age 12 and under $5. 11373 Highway 20 West, Galena, IL 1-815-777-033.
